Higher water levels expected for Malheur River this spring

Officials at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation are advising the public of risks associated with flood season as the Malheur River has higher than normal water levels this spring.

As of April 13, the Malheur River basin has received 111% of normal precipitation and has a snowpack that is 215% of normal. The three reservoirs on the Malheur River are filling as the snowpack melts with the warmer temperatures. Currently, Bully Creek Reservoir is at 95% of its capacity, Beulah Reservoir is at 53% of its capacity and Warm Springs Reservoir is at 30% of its capacity.

To make room in the reservoirs for more runoff from the snowpack, water is being released into the Malheur River at 3,820 cubic feet per second. Everyone should use extreme caution near the riverbanks and the United States Geological Survey is considering the river to be at flood-stage level.
