CNN  —  Disney’s 1989 “The Little Mermaid” was at once a masterpiece of the brand and a somewhat cringey retelling of a very dark Hans Christian Andersen tale. The story of a mermaid who gives up her voice to be with the man of her dreams, it falls neatly into the Disney canon of plucky, curious teenage women, whose pluck and curiosity mostly end up leading them into early marriage.

LAYTON, Utah — An explosion in a Layton home sent two people to the hospital Saturday afternoon. According to Layton City Fire Battalion Chief Brad Wilkes, the man and woman were inside the home near 850 North 2175 West when the explosion happened at approximately 3 p.m. “They were in working apparently on a basement floor, whether they were painting, sealing, we’re not sure, but the explosion happened in the floor,” Wilkes said.

As the U.S. military drawdown from Afghanistan continues, the White House announced that the Afghan president and chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation will visit with President Joe Biden on Friday in Washington. President Ashraf Ghani and Chairman Abdullah Abdullah's visit will "highlight the enduring partnership between the United States and Afghanistan as the military drawdown continues," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement Sunday.

A California dental office worker whose racist tirade in McDonald's went viral on TikTok has since been fired.  The woman, named in local reports as Gina Aiello, was filmed screeching 'f**k you, you f**king Mexican' at another customer after scolding minimum wage workers over her soda order.  In a 13-second clip which has been viewed 2 million times, Aiello can be seen mid-confrontation with another patron, Luis Aceves.  The footage begins with Aceves shouting at Aiello, accusing her of 'trying to degrade people' after she appears to have been embroiled in a spat with McDonald's workers.
